Participate in a Research Study on AI-Generated Music and Music Streaming Platform Policies
- Are you a musician or music listener who uses streaming platforms like Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube, or Bandcamp?
- Have you encountered or thought about AI-generated music, AI tools for music creation, or platform rules about AI content?
- Are you 18 years or older?
If so, we invite you to participate in a research study conducted by the University of Chicago in collaboration with Cornell Tech.
What is this study about?
Music streaming platforms are increasingly grappling with how to govern AI-generated music, including questions about transparency, attribution, and how AI-created content should be labeled or regulated.
We want to learn how musicians and listeners understand, experience, and interpret platform rules around AI-generated music. Our goal is to better understand inform platform policies on AI-generated music.
What does participation involve?
Participation involves two required steps:
Online Survey (10–15 minutes, via Qualtrics)
- A short questionnaire about your background and experiences with music streaming platforms and AI-generated music
- At the end of the survey, you will be asked to schedule an interview using a provided calendar link
Interview (45 minutes, via Zoom)
- A one-on-one interview with a member of the research team
- Discussion of your experiences, perspectives, and expectations around AI-generated music and platform transparency
Participation includes completing both the survey and the interview, but your involvement is completely voluntary. You may stop participating at any point.
What do you get for participating?
You will receive a $30 digital Amazon gift card upon completing both the survey and the interview.
Who can participate?
We are recruiting musicians and music listeners who use music streaming platforms.
You may be eligible to participate as a musician if you:
- Are a registered artist on at least one music streaming platform (e.g., Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, YouTube Music, etc.)
- Can provide a public artist profile or link to your music
- Have been a musician for at least six (6) years
- Have at least three (3) released tracks or singles available on a streaming platform
(Tracks may be part of an album or released individually)
You may be eligible to participate as a listener if you:
- Identify as a music streaming platform user
- Have used one of the following platforms regularly within the past year:
- Amazon Music
- Apple Music
- Bandcamp
- Deezer
- Pandora
- SoundCloud
- Spotify
- Tidal
- YouTube Music
- Other music streaming platforms
