We were excited to co-organize the fourth annual symposium on applications of contextual integrity, PrivaCI, at CornellTech in New York City. Jake presented at the symposium on our K-12 EdTech project and also helped mentor new and incoming students to the community – it was a great event all round!
Shriya just published a short blog post summarizing her senior thesis work to investigate what apps exist for helping children learn about privacy and security as part of our SPE4K project. In short, few popular apps exist for this purpose but parents surveyed indicated that having this kind of learning integrated into existing apps that children use may be more beneficial. We have exciting new papers coming out at various conferences on a wide range of topics: misinformation, Smart home Internet of Things, virtual private networks, dark patterns, and marginalization in the vulnerability discovery community. Check out the preprints on our publications page.

Jake and Amy joined a host of other students and faculty from UChicago Computer Science department to attend the National Robotics Week at the Museum of Science and Industry. Their game which involved having children and adults guess what data different stakeholders know about them was a resounding success and the overall event was really fun. We’re excited to show preliminary results from our K12 Inspector project on our new project website. The site is a work in progress but showcases a great dashboard created by Amy, Jason, and Jake from data scraped by our NYU team mates, Danny, Shucong, and Brandon!
We were so excited to be back in-person in October! To celebrate, earlier this quarter, we decided we should make the most of the good weather in Chicago for our first AIR lab social event with the NOISE lab. This is one of our socially distanced pictures from the event – sadly not all lab members were able to attend so this is a subset of us after pizza and cookies!
Marshini recently presented a longer version of her talk to Imagine All The People On A Trustworthy Internet at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, at the Design, Use, Build seminar at the University of Washington, and the HCI seminar at Stanford University. Despite being virtual, all these seminars were in welcoming, open environments, and it was great to share the insights from the AIR lab with others!
Together with amazing co-organizers, Blase Ur, Yan Shvartzshnaider, and Helen Nissembaum, we held the Third Annual Symposium of Applications of Contextual Integrity at the Department of Computer Science on September 30 and October 1, 2021. This was hybrid event co-organized with CornellTech and went off successfully thanks to volunteers from the AIR lab and SUPERgroup and others from the Department of Computer Science! For instance, Kelly co-chaired a session at the event. Thanks also to our support team, Sandy Quarles, Nita Yack, Tom Dobes, Rob Mitchum, and Rene Noyola!
